Rust Removal on battery tray

Post by davbell22602 »

My battery tray is pretty rusty so I used the electolysis method to clean the rust off.

Here's a picture of what looks like after doing half of it.

Good day DavBell22602,

That's a very interesting photo--I've never seen a picture of the results of that kind of rust removal before!

How long did you leave it in the solution?

Not really solution. I was in there for 2-3 hours. I used tablespoon of arm/hammer washing soda/soap per every gallon of water Then cooked it with a battery charger.

I never heard of using vinegar. I heard of using arm and hammer washing soda or baking soda. But the arm and hammer washing soda works the best from what I read about it.

I just treated several parts off my truck in vinegar, left them overnight then just cleaned them off with a rag, looked like new.

Hi,
Do you just soak it in the solution or do you have to utilize the battery charger too? :? This sounds interesting and I'd like to try it. Thanks!

Phosphoric acid will also neutralize rust for those that do not own a battery charger or other form of a power supply. Rinse well, dry well and apply etch primer before painting, for best results.

Looks good for a homegrown electrolysis job!
We would always use vinegar to "etch" sheet metal ductwork that would be painted.
Otherwise any paint on the metal will just peel off in a very short time. It was always explained to me that vinegar is basically like an acid (or a very mild acid).

Is there a certain mixture...water-bakinsoda/vinegar or the more the better :?

If the part isn't treated afterword..say I use this method for all my old fastners(nuts and bolts)for the truck. Will they stay blackened or just rust up again
I've had enough and I'm not alone

straight vinegar, then i washed it off with baking soda and water mixture and sprayed it off with water hose, dried parts with a rag and let them air dry, then painted...nothing technical about it....
