grille inserts, to paint, or not to paint, that is the ?

Post by Kurt Combs »

I am replacing my grille with a good ten to twenty footer. I have it apart on the living room floor polishing the anodized shell. My inserts are in pretty decent shape, one is cracked and will epoxy together just fine for a driver, but I am not sure if I want to repaint them or not. (I am getting away with living room floor thing because my wife broke her left arm and I have been playing jump and fetch-it since last Sunday evening). Anyone have bad experiences painting the inserts? Best brand of rattle can to use?

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I worked in a body shop years ago and everything that was plastic and getting painted would get sprayed with a adhesion promoter. Ive always had good luck with painting plastic useing it.

Duplicolor has been about the best automotive spray bomb ive found so far. Good selection of colors to.

Jump-in-fetch is'nt any fun is it  What color are you thinking about ? If you wanted to make them stand out some you could put a 460 decal on them before you install them :D I've never seen anyone do it to thier grille inserts but think it would look badazz :2cents: Good luck and show us how they look when your finished, You know how we like pictures

I am doing the old guy, old truck, sleeper thing. :D I am sure many are surprised when a stock looking old F250 flies by them at 70 MPH, accelerating. :D

I was actually thinking of repainting the inserts the stock color of semi-gloss grey, just freshening them up a little. Now you have me thinking about stock grey and flat black, hum.... I will have to look at the inserts and see what I think will look good. Maybe a 460 emblem in the center of the left insert, sitting back in a ways so it isn't too obvious.

Are the original inserts painted Ford Argent/metallic silver?
x2 on Duplicolor spray paint. Nice spray nozzles, good quality, lays on very well.

Duplicolor it is then, I will look for it tomorrow at the local parts stores and if they don't have it I will go to the automotive paint store on Monday and see what they have. Thanks guys for the input.

Before shooting the grill inserts, ya might wanna enhance the look by using a slightly different technique. Consider something like this: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/96122 ... nique.html

"Are the stock grille inserts on a 1970 argent?"

I'm not sure, all the grille inserts I get are the 71-72 type.
