Evapo-Rust: Anyone Use It?

Post by colnago »

I have a bunch of small-to-medium sized items to de-rust. I was wondering if anyone has used Evapo-Rust before. Just like anything else, I'm finding mixed reviews on the net.

Thanks,

I've had pretty good luck with it, here's what I found works best.
Parts should be completely degreased, and It helps to remove the heavy rust beforehand. Remaining rust will be dissolved, a quick wash in hot soapy water and it's back to bare rust free metal. Heavy areas of rust/scale may need another sanding and soaking.

It's great for fasteners, I let them soak in a plastic container sealed with a tight lid. A couple days should do it.
Removing the heavy rust first seems to keep it active longer, I can get 2 or 3 batches of nuts and bolts de-rusted before it goes flat.

I've use Permatex Extend in the past and was amazed at how well it worked.

wire wheeled a bed floor that was all surface rust. Blew and the dust off and wiped done with solvent. Coated with extend and then painted over. Had that truck for about 3 more years of new england weather and never any sign of rust again..

Dude, forget Evapo-Rust.... it just evaporates your money!!! ..... I HIGHLY recommend setting up an non-toxic electrolysis vat to de-rust parts. My set-up cost a whopping $30 and my parts come out with absolutely no rust. Here is the must-read website: http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp

Here's my setup:Image

After (a little wet).. absolutely no rust :

HIO Silver,

I just picked up the soda ash from Wal-Mart tonight. I'll pick up a plastic tub and rebar this weekend, and give it a go.
