Best paint for frame?

Post by HorseDr »

Getting ready to get started on my first frame off restoration and the first thing I need decide is what to paint the frame with after we get it blasted. I've been leaning toward powder coat, any ideas? What about the underside of the cab and bed? By the way, I live in the rust belt.
Thanks

I've been really pleased with POR-15 http://www.eastwood.com/rust-encapsulator.html and Eastwood's Chassis Black Gloss http://www.eastwood.com/the-original-ch ... h-set.html. Two coats of POR-15 and topcoat it with the black. I've done my frame, suspension and all related parts. Going to do my cab and bed bottoms too. Gives a real hard, durable finish and looks good too. I get mine straight from Eastwood.com. Takes about a quart per coat. Wait about an hour between coats of POR-15 and then about next day on the top coat, between 6 and 36 hours. After 36 hours they recommend scuffing for adhesion. I sprayed mine and it flows real well and has great coverage. The POR-15's a bit of a pain to clean up from though. Wear gloves, disposable clothes and clean your gun quickly with lacquer thinner. Let it sit and it won't come off of equipment and has to wear off of your skin. I got a little overspray on my forearm and didn't notice until it dried. Took two weeks before it stopped being noticeable. i dont know about powder coating. how long it lasts or anything. it seems thick. i have seen por15 on a frame. it sure looked tough to me. putting por 15 or its equivalant on the frame and body shoul dbe a great rust proofer. you can always paint over it any color you want too.

Depends on you budget. If you have a healthy budget I would go powder coat. If you are going lean on the money I would suggest using POR15 and applying a topcoat of chassis paint when it is tacky. The topcoat will be UV resistant and you can choose your level of gloss.

If your frame is seeing the sun there's something wrong.

I second the POR-15 suggestion. We used it on the frame, all suspension parts, inner fenders and the inside of all of the body panels. We brushed it on and it turns out smooth and very hard. It is a little expensive but definitely worth it.

I am aware that the frame will not see sunlight. My 67 project has por15 only on the frame and it looks good. It is a finish issue that I think it looks better and provides another layer of protection to topcoat the por15. The underside of my bed, cab, and inside of my fenders are all por15 with a top coat. It looks good and I wish I would have done it to my frame. I mention the UV resistance because sometimes people put their projects outside or whatever and that way they have knowledge of it.
