Re key tumblers

Post by bjde0b »

Is it possible to rekey the tumblers. It looks like the outside area around the key hole is pressed on after the tumbler is installed therefore it cannot be removed without excessive damage.

Any opinions?

I'd always re-keyed all our Schlage and Kwikset locks when I was a maintenance manager. I've looked at the locks and see the sliding cover your talking about that covers the pins. I'd say yes it can be done, but would recommend calling a locksmith to confirm as all cylinder pins are different diameter and very precise.
Please let us know what you find, as I've been real hesitant to tear into one!

Yes, it can be done. Under that cover are springs and brass tumblers of various lengths. All you have to do is figure out which length tumbler you need and acquire them. :D A locksmith should have a chart to tell them which lenght goes with the key your trying to match. Or you can spend hours guessing, like me. It's a novel way to kill a day

You saying the cover of the pins way key.....get it, key for a lock. Anyway, there are two pins for each of the 5 columns. I used a drum sander on my dremel and it was pretty easy. One column required a pin size that was longer than what I needed. I just left it out. I could make one out of a nail, but 4/5 is good enough. Locks keep honest people honest. That is what my grandpa used to say. He also said if man made it, I can fix it. I say the same thing now.

Why would I be restoring a truck if I couldnt do something as simple as modify the pins.

For those who want to do this, I was lucky with my cylinders because one key was barely cut and it was on the end. You will need a couple locks so you can mix and match and grind. Be careful not to lose the little springs and pins. Took me less than an hour. If people want to see how to do it, I will do pictures when I do the other door.
