Took it apart, found numerous problems.

One of the fixed plates that are part of the gear plate was broken in half.

Forward piston was scored and filthy. Scoring was from machined metal...not from sanding grit. Quality Chinese construction, there....

Revived it, but just.

Decided to upgrade. Bought an 'Astro' in line sander, which is the model for the HF clone. Night and day difference. Phenomenal performance.

Then, last night at my BIL's, my nephew gave me this old body sander, since he doesn't do body work. It was given to him by his grandfather: A Hutchins 3800. Pretty much the best brand out there. In exchange (I feel bad about taking a several -hundred dollar sander for free), I'll be working over a '79 Thunderbird Heritage. It has a whole host of easy-to-fix (for me) problems. The Hutchins makes the Astro look bad.

Life is good.

(Also, primed the bed, tailgate an front clip of my '67 today with Rustoleum primer. Working on the $75 paint job. The truck will be Safety Orange when done, which beats Used Dogfood Brown. More on this later).

Sounds good, I have the Ingersol Rand one and it's been good to me, just waited long enough for someone to closeout them on eBay and got it about half off 'list'. Now I just need to use it more often :)

It's nice having three sanders though...loaded them up with varying grits and can really blow through some work quickly.

Painted my daughter's Crown Vic today...nice to have that peeling clearcoat a distant memory.
