T-case stabilizer bar

Anyone know the reason for this bar? was it a factory option? part of a HD upgrade package? i only see this stabilizer bar on about 2 out of every 10 highboys i come across, i assume it's fuction is to help eliminate any possible drivetrain chatter and provide extra stability to the T-case but if so why is'nt it on every highboy?

the np 205's came w/ the bar the D24 did not but it makes for less t case movement under heavy loads.
