Safest way to remove the cab

Post by Broncobilly66 »

All I have is a 2 ton engine hoist. Can I just run a couple of large straps though the door openings( one at front and rear)?
Or would two pieces of lumber through the opening with straps at the ends be better(to not pinch the roof)?
Am I over thinking this?
Pics would be great
Thanks

now just so you know.. We used an electric winch on the grey cab, but it would drop it if it did not have power to it. So we used a manuel hoist on the blue cab, but the chain was scrapping the cab at the wiper grill area and did leave some good size scratches on it. be carefull and please post pictures of your progress...

I don't know if this works on Ford truck, but I lifted the body off of a 67 El Camino with a two post lift. I just put the pads under the pinch welds for the bottoms of the rocker panels and lifted it straight up. Then I just pushed the frame out from under the body. Of course you have to have access to a two post lift to do it this way.

Some have run chains in a criss-cross manner between the front and rear cab mounts and hooked the engine hoist in the center.. This is probably the safest way if you're using an engine hoist, but you will spend a little time finding (or getting manageably close to) the center of mass.
If you are feeling slightly more adventurous, you can take a 4x4 beam and place it through the door openings nearer the front of the cab, jack the hoist up in the center of the beam and go to town.... This will be done with a higher level of stress, but can be done.
It is recommended that you removed the doors for this.. It will make the cab weigh significantly less and will aid in the balance issue (and is practically necessary if you use an engine hoist). You will also need a second person to assist in keeping the cab steady as you operate the hoist.. I also removed the glass in my cab before doing this (just in case).
Bottom line, many of the members here have used an engine hoist successfully. It seems like an intimidating job, but goes quickly.. Several guys here have pictures of the job in their project threads if pictures help (they did for me).
Good Luck!!

Here's what I did. Good idea to have another set of hands on it 'cause it tends to be hard to balance. The straps to hold the back, from the inside, I hooked to the seat belt bolts.

Look at my thread in project updates called UNCLE FESTER and you can see how we did it with a chain hoist and with an 70 year old tractor. Should be plenty of pics there. Plenty of bed lifting pics too.
