Paint removal from aluminum grill

Post by bluef250 »

I removed an aluminum grill from a 1968 f-100 during a visit to a u pick it. The P.O.'s had painted it white then flat black. Doing an internet search they suggest using acetone (nail polish remover). I have done this before and not excited about doing it again. What has worked for you?

Aircraft paint removal, also known as Klean-Strip KS-3 Stripper at Home Depot. I've used it before on motorcycle aluminum. It causes the paint to bubble and lift off. Note that it is caustic, and you'd better use rubber gloves, or you will wish you had! Get it on your skin, and you'll know it! It's kind of "gloppy", so you'll need to brush it on and let it set, then wipe/hose it off.

Good luck!

To remove the anodized coating, I suggest using oven cleaner like Easy Off... be careful because it has lye and is just as nasty as aircraft paint remover. Multiple applications and scrub it with red scotchbrite pads or coarse steel wool. Wear chemical-rated gloves.

I think you best bet is to have it soda blasted... it'll remove the anodized coating and leave the aluminum alone.
