windshield install

hello everyone. finally got the daughters truck painted and am now preparing to install windshield. I have a new gasket from NPD. I'm wondering if it;s adviseable to use silicone when adhering the gasket to the cab, or leave it dry? Additionally has anyone purchased the door weatherstripping for their bump from NPD? I did and what they sent has me scratching head, its not slit which would allow you to place it in the door cab opening but it does have some smal white buttons similar to whats used to hold insulation into a firewall or something similar. There are no corresponding holes in the cab opening to push these little buggers thru.

Any other glass installation tips will be appreciated.

Never use Silicone.

It can leave a residue that will make future repains nearly implossible to get cleanly...

A little dish soap (mixed 1:1 with water) on the gasket is enough.

I have done them dry... not too bad even dry.

But does the rubber gasket by itself seal tightly enough to the pinchweld opening to prevent leaks? Because it appeared that there was some sort of gooey sealant under the original rubber seal. And I was thinking of soap and water for the glass to the rubber, thanks for the confirmation

Back in the day I would take my car to a body shop and they had a dispenser that squirted sealant under the gaskets to stop leaks. They mostly worried about the upper part of the gasket as the bottom should not leak unless water runs uphill. I'd install it and turn a hose on it to see if it leaks. Then I would find a way to seal it, if needed.

My truck's second windsheild was installed dry, installer then ran a bead of bedding compond between the gasket and frame; under the drip rail, and down both "A"
pillars. The lower part of the A pillar where the 2 sections connect has been a source of leaks for me in the past. The sealant used by the installer worked well on the new windsheild, no leaks.

the times i've replaced my windshield myself i just used soapy water to get the gasket to slip into place easier- no sealant needed,never leaked once

We always use the soapy water as a lube trick, cant remember how many we've done and never a leak, just use a good quality gasket and get everything clean,clean clean first..

well, that didnt go so well. Made it to the second to last corner and while my daughter was pulling the rope and I was pushing on the outside I cracked the crap out of it. I will say one thing, the aftermarket windshield I bought was way thinner (read cheaper) than the original factory one.

So I'm on the hunt for an original one, and I'm gonna pay someone to put it in

I also screwed up by putting my new replacement window fuzzies in BEFORE I put the side glass in (dumbass me). Now I have to remove them. Can this be done without destroying them? I hope so.

The fuzzies are not made to be removed without destroying them once they are in. I had put new ones in my 72 just prior to it dying, and then tried to salvage them to use on my 69 Crew. No luck... The clips that pop into the holes will bend and break. Even if you get them out, they will be bent out of shape and when you go to put them in again, they will not be tight and will be loose causing rattling. Its an unfortunate mistake, and you can try and salvage them, but I would guess you will end up buying them again.

67-72 will work for sure.. Not sure of other years. Someone else might pop in and answer if earlier or later will work, but you can't go wrong with a windshield from a 67-72.

We do know about the capillary effect, don't we? You know, the one which makes water flow against gravity, i.e. UP. I would always air on the side of caution when sealing things against water. As far as the OP is concerned, I don't know much about it, but others here have posted plenty of ideas.

I always thought it was a good idea to leave the bottom unsealed to allow water to run out, kind of like caulking a window on a house. I could see where a truck windshield might have water blown under it, but I would still worry about capturing water if I sealed the bottom of a windshield gasket.

Dave, my bump has the windshield from my 79' in it, (as well as a bunch more parts the 79' donated.
From 67-79 the front windshields are the same.
