Tailgate issues

Post by SevNT2Bump »

The rod that connects the handle to the latch keeps slipping off the handle mechanism. I'm sure others have/had this problem. I think there was a piece of plastic or something that locked it on, which broke off. I was wondering what the solution is that others did to fix this. I don't want to bend the rod back to much. I'm afraid of tweeking the rod to much that I'll mess it up. Or, is this the only solution?

Couldn't tell you. This is it. I'm just tired of using pliers to open the tailgate.

I am looking for a correct tailgate (and hood) before I paint.

Ah, a dentside tailgate.
The rods from the latches to the release handle on the bump's are held with small hairpin-shaped clips.
Do those rods have holes on the ends?

Didn't see a hole. I think they started attaching a plastic clip on the end of it and it broke off. I think I'm gong to try to thread a nut on the end of it. It's only temp since I will be switching to an appropriate tailgate.

Since I'm on the topic, do all bump style tailgates match up? I read something here once on this topic and I'm having a hard time finding it.

Yep, all styleside tailgates fit. I've also seen pre 67 gates on a bump too, definitely a different letter style.

Keep your eyes on your local and outlying Craigslist. New take offs come up for sale. So many of our bumps were bought for campers, tailgate removed and stowed. I've found 3 in the last year or so, they are out there.
