Anyone ever done this? Have you you ever used a "Roller"?

Search this forum...body & paint...for $50 paint job. Read that thread for a while...it's got to still be around, just buried by newer stuff.

CarCraft did a roll-on Rustoleum job on a 60s Falcon. Ya need to use fine foam rollers and lots of patience. 'Takes quite a few coats (like at least five) to start getting decent coverage.

Pros: Cheap! - a 10-foot paint job at best. Better results if you wet-sand and then buff it out.

Cons: Loooooong drying time. Controlling the environment is a must. Definitely an indoors-only job cuz the paint is sticky for a loong time.

Proper bodywork is still a must. Spend your time there and be rewarded with whatever final coat is applied.

There's a guy a few blocks away that has a deuce-and-a-half. (Yes a 2.5 ton 6x6 army truck). Last week he painted it with a brush. From ten feet away it looks good. He paint over the dirt and grease. :? LOL Wait a few months and it won't look so good. :lol:

Me, I would use up 100 rattle cans before considering a roller or a brush.

If you do your own prep work, the Maaco and Earl Sheib type place will do a decent top coat. The biggest problem is that they do lousy prep.

:D i fancy myself an expert in the cheap and nasty driveway paintjob dept. so here's my :2cents:

done well a roller job can look as good as a cheap spray job ,done not so well and you'll wish you'd either popped the cash for 10 rattlecans (it usually only takes 8 ) or left well enough alone

you lay down ALOT of paint with a roller,so it'll hide really crappy bodywork ( :lol: on one of my "victims" it hid the duct tape holding the rusted fender together....for awhile at least .. :lol: .) but runs and "stippling" are real issues

- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood,some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox,behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame,rear end,rear springs,and rear bumper...

I'll add my bit in the way of cheap paint jobs. I have not done the roller, but I have done spray can and I have also bought a gallon of rustoleum for $27+/- and sprayed it on.

I had 36 bucks in rustoleum pro enamel satin black spray paint on this bronco and it was oaky, but kind of uneven. I attribute some of the uneven due to using satin black. Flat or gloss would have been better:

Next was my 68 F100 with a gallon of rustoleum pro enamel thinned with 15% acetone. It was shot with a HVLP, good filter, and a 20gallon/5hp compresser:

The reason I added the bit about thinning it is that the first time I shot I did not thin it and it took forever to paint, and had way too much texture. I had to sand and reshoot as a result except I did not do the tailgate because I thought it was good enough. This photo tells other wise. Check out the difference in texture, refletions, and color between the body and tailgate:

Long response and to sum it up...if you don't have access to a compressor and gun the spray bomb aint such a bad option. No matter what clean, clean, clean dry, dry, dry, and then tack cloth right before shooting. And last, but not least, expect a ten foot or further paint job from a novice like me. :) Hey, it's a work truck so I can live with it.

That doesn't look bad for a rattle can job. I bet you could wetsand and buff it out and it would look pretty decent, maybe make it an 8 footer LOL.

Primed and painted the roof of a Neon with a roller. Looked great and the funny looks from the neighbors was priceless!!

Yep--Couldn't see spending a a thousand dollars in paint for a truck that was free to me. Sprayed with a conventional gun, after stripping to metal, taking care of the bodywork and a bazillion drilled holes in the top of the bed. Wet sanded and polished. Not embarrassing to drive anymore....this pic has the brand new skinny tires on stock 16" wheels and painted hubcaps. Put a new (pick and pull) dashpad on today. Tomorrow she'll get a bath and a wax. Safety orange, inside and out with a white top, white trim stripe on the painted rear bumper (top of the diamond plate bumper is roll on bedliner) and roll on bedliner inside and on the bed rails.

Total cost for materials was around $200. Tires were three times that....
