slide out spare tire holder-upper (technical term)

Post by Kurt Combs »

Anyone know if the slide out spare tire mechanism from a 77 dent will fit a 72 F-250. My 72 has a spare tire under bed holder, but it doesn't slide out like the later models. The dent came with a 15 inch rim and the 72 probably stated out in life with 16.5 inch rims. If this will work, it would be really cool!

Kurt,
Not sure what you mean by "slide out"? I had the one from my 79' bolted under my 71' for a few years before putting the cable type in that I now have. The 79' was the type that you un-screwed the one bolt / then lowered the assembly / and the assembly did spin outward as you lowered it. Remove the "tinnerman" type bolt clips from the frame rail of the 77 as they will go onto the holes of the bump. I can't remember if I had to drill another hole for it to work or not. Seems like I did have to, as the spacing wasn't the same-more diagonal than straight across like our original? :hmm:

The slide out spare tire mechanism was listed on the build sheet and might be optional equipment. Considering the frames are different widths, I doubt it will fit my bump. Too bad, I had the spare tire out from under the truck quickly and I didn't have to read any directions to figure it out.

The slide out carrier is cool and will fit just fine but you may have to drill a new hole for it. The frame width does not matter because the tire carriers mount at an angle and you simply make the angle bigger by drilling a new hole if you have to but I think the widths are pretty close. The carriers are different for the different trucks (F100, F250 etc...) but the only difference is the center tab that the hole in the wheel goes over. All you have to do is cut it down or make it bigger by bolting a piece of metal on so the carrier fits your wheel. Slide out carriers can be tough to find when you want one but once you pay a premium for one, they will be everywhere and cheap! LOL Hawkrod

Okay, that mean the slide out does not go with the truck when I sell it! :D
