Cowl to hood seal question

I'm replacing the seal between the cowl and the hood(apparently known as the hood seal), mine was completely gone. The new one is "L" shaped. With the clips on the "back" of the L, does the leg that sticks out go on top, or on bottom? Thanks for the help!

I think you can see it here. The flat part of the "L" should be on top so that the lip of the hood seals against it when lowered:

Yes, the part that sticks out goes on top. I hope you have good luck with that seal. Many people (myself included) have had problems with the clips not matching up with where the holes are. I guess the truck they are using as a pattern over in China had mis-stamped holes or something! If you are extrememly careful you can reposition the clips, but the tangs break very easily.
Someone on here said the used a piece of door weatherstripping (slid the edge of the hood into the groove of the weatherstripping IIRC) and said it sealed quite well.

Many people (myself included) have had problems with the clips not matching up with where the holes are.

Add one more to the list, although I did use the one from my 79' dent. Two of the clips didn't line up exactly so I elongated the firewall holes slightly to make it work.

Hard to see, but enlarging the underhood photos, on this truck, the clips are on top, the rubber is as an "L". The remnants on my '72 suggested this way as well.

*edit* "L" as opoosed to a "7". Lip goes on facing downwards, cradles the rear of hood. Installing the other way may cause panel misalignment and seal distortion.

So you're saying that the part that sticks out, will stick out from the bottom rather than the top? I can seem to locate the picture you referred to. I'll have to look around a little more I guess to make sure. Thank you for the input.

Worked out great other than my arms being almost too short to reach across! I go this made in USA piece off of ebay, I had to squeeze a few of the
clips to get them in the holes, otherwise it looks great and fits perfect. I realize it's not so much a necessary piece, but little things like that sure make the engine compartment look a little better. I'm about to run out of $20 things to do to it though, it's going to start getting expensive now! Thanks for everyone's input on this little deal. I decided to install it with the leg sticking out on the top. Looks fine. Everyone have a great day!

Just wanted to re-visit this thread as I gave ya'll the wrong advice here. I found my link to the 358 mile 70' model truck that shows the proper installation of the cowl gasket, (with the flat on the bottom-just the opposite as I described above):



So...I've got mine in upside down LOL! Well it seems to keep most stuff out of the engine compartment so I'll leave it alone until it needs replaced again.

Hmmm....That actually makes sense now that I see the pic up close. With the lip on the bottom, any water that went off the back of the hood would be directed off either end where the natural flow of air past the end of the hood and fender seam would either blow it out the sides or redirect it down onto the inner fender and then off, either to the rear or toward the front and then down to the ground. An engineering/aerodynamic marvel!
