Underside Bed cleaning

Post by 68FORDJBM »

Does anyone have any tips for the easiest way to remove road grime from the underside of my truck bed. That stuff is worse that engine grease. I've got the bed removed and flipped over for easy access. I just want to clean it and prep it for a new paint. Any suggestions for what coating to use under there?

I dont have any easy fixes for you, but I had to do some welding on the bootom side of my bed and I used a good engine degreaser and brush then blasted it all with the pressure washer after. It worked good but took a little bit of time.

Thanks, that was the plan. I was just hoping for an easier way or a better solvent.

I've had the best luck with Super Clean, WalMart has it in the gallon size. use a spray bottle. I use a lot of that stuff...will discolor paint and aluminum however. Greetings from Seattle!

I sandblasted mine and then coated it in Zero-Rust. So far so good! :D

Same thing here, I worked on it for two days, 40 years of road grime and grease from the u-joints was hard as nails, had the complete bed blasted, looked like brand new.

I sandblasted mine also - and then shot it with Nason self-etching primer. So far so good.

I may have to try the easy off since I don't have the resources to sandblast. One thing is for certain: that road grime is tough. I almost thought maybe I should just leave it alone where I don't see the rust. It may be the best protective covering I can find:) Why take it off?

That may not be a bad idea. They guy I bought my truck from spilled foundation coating inside the bed. The sandblaster couldn't take it off without warping everything around it. I told him to leave it alone and took it off later with a wire-wheel. There was nothing but good metal underneath.

I use the cheap oven cleaner as a degreaser. Works very well for this. But it can take off some paint.
