Re: 50 Dollar paint job
I've thought about it but ended up using a spray gun with rustoleum. The result was OK, which is all I need for a plow truck/wood hauler. The roller method in the video seems like it would work OK but I wouldn't do it on anything except a vehicle that was for work, not for show.

Re: 50 Dollar paint job
Ny brother is doing this on a mid-50s Chevy. One reason is that he can do it outside (he has zero room for setting up any kind of paint booth). Another reason is that he can involve his five-year-old, and turn it into a father-and-son bonding experience. Obviously, this won't be a show truck, but it's helping to keep the "fun factor" alive during the rebuild.

Re: 50 Dollar paint job
im doing a rustolium paint job on my vw rabbit right now. And will be tearing into my ford as soon as the rabbit is done. As far as prep goes my plans are to use Jasco paint stripper and take it down to the metal. Then seal the whole thing with Corraseal. Put some filler where it needs it. Then shoot with a few coats of Rustoleum primer, wet sand it, and then shoot with 3-4 coats of whatever rustoleum paint i can get to mix close the the factory "new lime" paint. Wet sand between coats, and then a few coats of clear. Should be interesting.
On the VW i tried sanding out all the flaws. After 4 days of sanding I still had little flaws in the primer when it was shot. I figure it would be easier to just go to metal and build back up.
Ill be shooting the VW with color today so ill let you know how that turns out.

Re: 50 Dollar paint job
I haven't painted a vehicle in over 30-yrs... with the exception of shooting the occasional bumper with a spray can... or the touch-up work I did on the wife's quarter-panel...
I plan to have my '69 painted, inside and out, in the spring. I'll be doing all the prep-work at home, and having a local shop shoot the paint for me. They wanted $3K to do the prep-work (including rust repair) and painting, but only $400 to $450 to shoot it with their primer/paint... $200 less if I supply the color(s).
I'll have lots of fun stripping out the interior, and have probably several weeks worth of minor rust repairs ahead of me (hope my welder still works, and I remember how to use it
). I would definitely be interested in some detailed info for what to do / what NOT to do in prep work for getting her ready for shooting by the pros. I'm not looking for a show-quality finish, but I do want it to look like it was from the show-room floor when its done....
Also, anybody got advice for repairing the rust "gash" in the bed-side, above the chrome? I've no idea how to do this the right way... and both sides are the rusted the same way! This picture is from my original bed, but the one I just picked up for $75 has rust in the same spot, just not as bad... but I'm sure once I start grinding away at it... I'll be looking at the same "gash" in both beds....

Re: 50 Dollar paint job
That seems to be from the bed seam. I just redid the seams on my bed. I'm guessing your color is Wimbledon White. You can get that at almost any auto store (Napa, O'Reilly's). What you could do is tape above and below that and take a metal brush to it and get that seam cleaned up. Put new sealant in it and rattle can that bad boy. May not be the prettiest, but will get you done for under $25.Earthling789 wrote:I haven't painted a vehicle in over 30-yrs... with the exception of shooting the occasional bumper with a spray can... or the touch-up work I did on the wife's quarter-panel...

Re: 50 Dollar paint job
I'm in the middle of the spray process on the F250 today. Essentially it's 'shoot' and 'walk away for an hour'. It's laying down nicely at a 4:1 ratio of paint/thinner, 55 lbs at the conventional gun. Pictures probably tomorrow. At least one more coat tonight (four light coats so far) on the cab, doors and bed. I'll be shooting the front sheetmetal later in the week.

Re: 50 Dollar paint job
Finished the paint job on Sunday, and did a little reassembly last night, front fenders now back on. Then a little wet-sanding with 1500 grit (didn't have 2000) and a bit of work with the polisher. Hood is still off, the interior is still in pieces...I didn't do the dash, just the inside of the doors, roof and back of cab, along with everything outside. The bed was left in primer as it'll get a roll-on bedliner (also Rustoleum...)
I'm stunned on how nice this stuff buffed out.
I used an entire gallon of Safety Orange on the pickup, and a gallon of thinner as well, but a lot of that went for cleanup of the gun and wipe down of overpray. I'll get some pics up one of these days when I shoot them with a better camera than my phone...
Good stuff. Thumbs up on this idea..

Re: 50 Dollar paint job
I painted a 77 chevy with rustoleum and it looked decent for a working plow truck/wood hauler. Its not show room quality but it was a cheap way to make it one color and learn a little about painting without spending a bunch of money.
