1970 vs 1971 grille shell

Post by 70shortbox »

Will 70 inserts fit in a 71 shell? Are there any differences? They sure look the same to me.

The shell from 70-72 is the same. Only the inserts changed so all 3 years of inserts are interchangeable.

70 inserts mount using four screws and mount different than 71-72 These inserts take six screws and mount different than the 70 You can't use 70 inserts on a 71-72 shell without modifying the shell. and visa versa. Look again at the inserts four mounting. You can modify by using washers and or spacers but in my opinion it does not look right. On the 71 insert there is the chrome strip in center, once removed you'll see the other two mounting screws.

Ah, sorry for my incorrect information. I knew the 71-72 were interchangeable and assumed the 70 was as well. Learn something new everyday.

Actually... My 71 came to me with 70 inserts. They fit fine, and looked fine and factory correct. When I took the 70 inserts out to replace them with the original 71 inserts, I noticed that the two top tabs had been bent to accomodate the 70 pieces. The bottom screws were not used at all. I rebent the tabs back and reinstalled the 71 inserts. Everything fits good this way also.
The answer to your question is that they ARE interchangable with slight (non-permanent) alterations.
