Sanblasting Panels

Post by Ford110 »

I've got a 67 f100.

I've blasted the metal grill, rims, tailgate with great results. I went to a u do it place with an industrial blaster using sand.

I want to try to do the box, inner and outer.

I've been reading up on warping of panels when sandblasting, but also that it can be done. Slow and careful. Metal types also have an impact. Inner is a bit beat up anyways, so should not be a problem.

Has anyone tried this on their panels(box) on their trucks, if so how, and what were the results?

Do it yourself or get it done? I want to restrict it to the box. The rest can/will be sanded.

If you never sand blasted body panels before take it to a pro.
it'll be money well spent. :2cents:

Sheet metal can warp easy even with a small blaster and even on our old heavy steel.

(You should see what it can do to the new thin stuff  )

the way to do it is a little at a time. then stop. go on to the next panel and keep rotating doing just a small section at a time. that way the panels dont get hot. this is what i have learned. but i have never done it. its just the way i learned abotu this and welding body panels myself.

:yt: It's just like welding in new panels you have to stitch weld it and jump around so's you don't get the metal too hott and warp it or worse blow all kinds of holes in it.

I never thought about the panels heating up...but it makes perfect sense, that's a lot of friction. I'll keep this in mind when I start blasting. Thanks guys!

Did mine on the weekend. Worked fine, slow and steady working on a 45 degree angle about two feet away. Because you're farther away, over spray is a concern, so ensure you remove anything you do not want to get damaged(including windows) if you are doing it on the vehicle, or mask and protect with cardboard(worked for me, but you have to really watch what is going on). No warping.

I have a small pot that I use for pieces. I have taken the inner fenders, radiator support, seats, outer front fenders to blasters without any problems. I will strip the hood by hand, but I will probably have them blast the doors and underside of the hood for me. Same thing Ford110 said, keep distance from the piece and work at a 45. That is what I talked to the guy about and so far so good.

Barry from SPI who makes high quality paint highly discourages soda blasting. You might check out the forum at SPIuserforum.com. Also check out autobody101.com forums.
