What gauge steel to buy??

Post by Calfdemon »

Planning on cutting away the rust from the roof of my 69 Crew tomorrow and welding in some new metal. I need to go buy the metal today. I am assuming that I need steel, but does anyone know what gauge of steel to buy?

Ive got a few more shopping hours left, so looking for a quick response if anyone has one. :)

Thanks in advance!

So for our trucks, 18 and 20 is the way to go?? That will match up to the stock metal?

And thank you for the fast response... I need to buy some steel in the next 2 hours. :)

if its flush on the outside where it can be seen,it shouldnt matter, but if its on the hood where you can see the other side id go with what the trucks gauge is,eastwoods got a cool gauge tool to tell you what thickness sheetmetal is,looks like a round spark plug gapper tool in a way,ive seen articles and threads saying its 18 guage sheet metal on bumps,BUT i could be wrong....happy shopping and welding!

go to the junkyard and cut a roof off another bump. use it as repair or a replacement piece.
