New Inner Fender Unpainted Bare Metal

Post by undertakerman »

Hey guys. At the Smoky Mountain F-100 Run in June of this year I bought a new right inner fender for my 68 F100 and it is bare mental. What do I do to prepare it for painting? Need a little guidance please. Don't want to screw it up. Thanks in advance guys. :? :? :?

scuff it with a lite sand paper. then prime it. the scuffing is so the paint will stick better. dont get any goughes in it. just use a fien sand paper. or scotch brite or steel wool pads may work too.

If it has any rust you need to clean it completely off.

A/C industry my whole life. Bare sheet metal ductwork we'd paint would always need "etched" prior to painting. We used vinegar, (wiped on with a rag and allowed to dry before spray painting).
There are professional products made to etch bare metal prior to painting.

You can get self etching primer in aerosol or the type that needs to be mixed.
Or a two part epoxy.

whatever you use, clean the part real good with a wax and grease remover before AND after sanding.
If the metal is real clean use a red scotch brite ,if it is lightly rusted some where around 180 grit will do.
