Cab mount pads replacement

Search didn´t help me. Can I replace the rubber pads on the cab mounts without taking the cab off? I was thinking about using a jack with a block of wood on top and lifting the cab slightly corner after corner. Is that how you do it?

yes you can jack itup and replace them. for the rear you may have to jack both sides up at the same time. hopefully the rears will come apart easily. they sometimes stick together and you have to use a punch and hammer to punch them out from the top. which means the cab would have to come off.

Hope you don't mind if I hijack your thread for a minute but I'm in a similar situation. I've stripped down to the frame and got everything off except those cab mount/radiator support bushings. Struggled for 45 mins trying to get the rad support bushings to separate and finally gave up and stripped one of the rubber donuts off them so I can get to them with a hacksaw or sawzall. They do just slip together, right? How about the rear cab mount bushings? I know those actually had the bolts threaded into them when I pulled the cab. Do those just slip together, too, or are they threaded together? Thanks!

yes they all slip together. but over the years they can become rusty. and probably are stock wedged together when the factory put the bolt through them and tightened them all down. that is why you eitehr end up cutting the core support bushings in half and driving apart the rear bushing. the front cab bushing is a toss up. some have come apart for me and others i have cut in half.

Thanks, sargentrs! Glad you could also profit of my build thread! :)

Hopefully my cab mounts will come off..I won´t remove the cab at this time :doh:

My core support pads are also fused together, but that may just be the POR15 in which I covered them when painting my engine compartment :hmm:

If my rear mounts won´t come off, would it be okay to only change out the front ones, at least for a while?

I wouldn't half #$$ it. I know its a pain but worth it in the end. Espicially since I know you have been doing a lot of work to this truck to make it nice. I think you should take the time to get them out and new ones in. I remember I used a cutting torch to get my rear ones out. I am not recommending that you do that, but just saying they are always a paint to get 40+ year old mounts out.

Just spent a good part of the day fighting with mine. I tried to pound them apart, but ended up having to take the grinder to them, cutting the top plate off and knocking them through. Mine definitely could not have been replaced with the cab / bed still on.

look at the rear of the cab. and see if the bed and cab Bump line up. if they line up then the rear cab mounts are ok. but they probably arent. and need to be replaced when the frotn ones are replaced.

i've had pretty good luck when the bushings are fused together by drilling the rusted steel sleeve in the centre of em out out and smoking em with a hammer and a cold chisel as a wedge a few times and a big screwdriver as a drift and to wiggle em out - they usually come out that way semi,sorta easy (ish)..(.usually.)...
you end up having to replace the sleeve with a short piece of pipe the right size though
the rear cab mount bushings usually come out a lot easier than the fronts do for me ,probably cuz there's usually less corrosion back there ...the rad support bushings are the ones that cause me no end of grief
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood,some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox,behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame,rear end,rear springs,and rear bumper...

I know I should better replace them, but I think they could be worse right? If I decide to change them now and I can not do it without taking the cab off I will crazy :x Maybe I should get it back together now and get it back on the road again and change the mounts in the winter when I have time to do so. :hmm: What do you think?

I can´t get everything perfect at once or I won´t drive my truck again before next year :(

it lines up pretty good. i like the drill idea that was posted. that would work real good without having to remove the cab.

they' look a little soft,but not totally split or anything,and your cab seems to line up pretty well with the box,i'd go enjoy cruising around for the summer and do em later

That´s fantastic news! I thought they were worse. I´ll replace them somewhen in the winter and then also take the cab off and do some more rust removal. :thup:
